ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates, Sept. 29, 2025: UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan met with OpenAI Chief Executive Officer Sam Altman on Saturday in Abu Dhabi, where they discussed potential avenues for collaboration in the field of artificial intelligence. The meeting took place at Qasr Al Shati and centered on the expansion of partnerships between OpenAI and key UAE institutions focused on artificial intelligence research and deployment.

Discussions also addressed the development of AI applications across public and private sectors as part of the UAE’s ongoing efforts to build a knowledge-based, technology-driven economy. The visit comes as the UAE accelerates its investment in advanced technologies, including AI infrastructure and research capacity. OpenAI, a leading developer of large language models and AI systems, has recently expanded its global partnerships in both commercial and governmental sectors. Altman’s meeting with the UAE president follows a series of high-level engagements with policymakers and technology leaders across Asia and the Middle East.

During the engagement, President Sheikh Mohamed reaffirmed the UAE’s commitment to positioning artificial intelligence at the core of its national development agenda. The two parties explored practical frameworks for cooperation in AI development, data training models, and sector-specific deployment, particularly in areas such as healthcare, education, and government services. As part of the visit, the Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI) conferred its first honorary doctorate on Altman.

The recognition highlights Altman’s contributions to the advancement of AI technologies and leadership in the field. The university, based in Abu Dhabi, is the world’s first graduate-level research institution focused exclusively on artificial intelligence and has played a key role in supporting the UAE’s AI strategy. The UAE has intensified its focus on artificial intelligence over the past several years, establishing regulatory frameworks, specialized institutions, and high-capacity computing infrastructure.

In recent months, Abu Dhabi has announced plans to host one of the world’s largest AI data centers and has launched projects aimed at developing Arabic-language AI models. In May 2025, the UAE signed an agreement with the United States to construct an AI-focused education and research campus in Abu Dhabi. The initiative is expected to bolster the country’s role as a regional hub for emerging technologies and advanced computing.

Saturday’s meeting underlines the UAE’s strategy of engaging directly with global technology leaders to enhance its AI ecosystem and accelerate the deployment of cutting-edge solutions across key economic sectors. The engagement also reflects OpenAI’s expanding international outreach as part of its broader mission to ensure the safe and beneficial use of artificial intelligence worldwide. – By Content Syndication Services.
